Celebrating Swimming Success in Manchester
We’re making waves. Across our community leisure centres, young swimmers are achieving incredible milestones in the water. Despite post-pandemic challenges swimming pools in Manchester had over a million visits per annum last year. Swim School and Education Swim programmes have gone from strength to strength. Swim School has reached a record 9786 members on the Learn to Swim Programme delivering over 1200 lessons per week across the 9 pools and 138 primary and special schools are receiving regular education swim lessons (217 lessons per week) supporting almost 9,000 pupils.
These successes showcase just how far our young swimmers have come. Their dedication, resilience, and joy in the water reflect the power of sport to build confidence and community.
Why Learning to Swim Matters
Swimming is more than just a sport—it’s a life-saving skill. According to Swim England, drowning remains one of the most common causes of accidental death in children. Teaching children to swim equips them with essential safety skills and opens the door to a lifetime of health, fun, and opportunity. In Manchester, 77% pupils can swim 25 metres and 71% can perform a self-rescue.
Here’s why every child should learn to swim:
- Safety First: Swimming is the only sport that can save your life.
- Health Benefits: It boosts heart and lung health, strength, flexibility, and posture.
- Confidence & Social Skills: Swimming helps children grow in confidence and make friends.
- Accessibility: Suitable for children of all abilities, including those with additional needs.
- Gateway to Adventure: Enables participation in sports like kayaking, surfing, and diving.
